Two outstanding bike advocates share stories this week: Michael Cranwell and Scott McMillan.
First, a conversation with Michael Cranwell, General Manager of a bike shop called Gears, in Toronto’s Canary District. Over the past week, Michael has been putting up some intriguing social media posts with the hastag #essentialServices. I happen to agree with Michael that bicycles are essential. Isn't this how we should be treating our essential service workers: Not like they're dispensible, but rather like they're invaluable!
Then, a charming conversation with a Smithers dad, Scott McMillian. Scott has stories about his bike—and other essential services—and how his six-year-old son Jax is tagging along and following Scott’s example.
I'm impressed with both these men on several levels. In this interview, Michael demonstrates respect and compassion for his employees at the bike shop (and I love how he values his wrenchers! wowzas) And his enthusiasm for watching people fall in love with bicycles is only surpassed by my own passion for it. Scott's pragmatic, matter-of-fact treatment of a bicycle for transportation is the kind of attitude I hope many more people will adopt as a result of the pandemic. And if there's any bike story I could never get tired of hearing, it's how much Jax loves his new bike.
And the best part of this week? Jax rides a Rocky Mountain; I ride a Rocky Mountain. 'nuff said.
