Corina and Michael Weber will introduce us to Michael's mother, Elfi, who has an extraordinary story about a bicycle race up Mount Etna!
Today’s surprise episode comes to us from Munich, Germany through my young friends, whom I met last fall when they had decided to take up temporary residence in Smithers, BC. When the pandemic hit, they returned to Germany where they would have access to proper health care.
I approached Corina because I know she cycles around Munich and I was curious about changes to infrastructure and COVID-19 policies. She agreed to my rather pedestrian request, and then astonished me with an additional offer: twenty years ago, Michael’s mother rode up Mount Etna in a cycling competition. The result? She won in her category. While the result is astonishing in itself, there were many unlikely elements to Elfi even considering this race, and to this day she and her family speak of the day with a tone of amazement.
