As sawmills in Northern, B.C. continue to be shuttered, a local mill has become the latest casualty.
Season Forest Products, which operated a Kant mill just west of Witset, was put up for sale back in September, after shutting its doors due to difficulties securing wood fibre for the mill.
Kants are basically a log that has been squared on all sides. In Seaton’s case they were using what is usually referred to as “decadent wood”, logs that are not utilized by conventional sawmills. Or wood that would otherwise be burned in the bush.
The operation provided a value-added product, which is rarely seen in the forestry industry these days, as well as dozens of jobs for local communities for years. After they were denied a timber license, the owners decided to put the Seaton mill up for sale.
Today we speak with Andy Thompson, co-owner of Seaton Forest Products, about their struggles to secure a long-term timber license and why they decided to close shop.
