Open the Tickle Trunk, curl up on your blanket and pull out the milk and cookies: today, we’re visiting the Wit'suwit'en Child and Family Center!
There are many leaders in this village who have taken initiative in launching positive, healthy programming for our members—people at the Health Centre, the Band Office staff, at the W’tsuwit’en Language and Culture Society, and at the Kyah Wiget Education Society. There are two I want to highlight this episode: first, the Moricetown Wit'suwit'en Child and Family Center. We’re going to speak with ECE Manager Charmayne Nikal and support worker Azedeh Gagnon. This visit was easily as much fun as, well, as that clichéd barrel full of monkeys! Thie thing is, what happens in this building is also surprisingly intelligent, heartwarming and forward thinking. As my visit was wrapping up, I wondered just how much better our society as a whole would be if everyone had access to these programmes.
My second conversation is with June Wickham, Addictions and Trauma Worker at the Health Centre. This one might not be as much fun, but boy, does it make me feel good about what’s happening here right now, and the future for these villagers.
