Last week was the annual Return of the Salmon canyon opening in Moricetown.
This is both a traditional ceremony and an officially recognized event, where the indigenous and non alike welcome the return of a staple in our diet, a symbol of the Witsuwit’en people, and of course, the return of sport fishing in the canyon. We’ll hear Chief Namox on the importance of this canyon and the salmon, and from Walter Joseph, the Witsuwit’en Fisheries and Wildlife Manager, as well as a few clips from officials and elders at the ceremony.
Also today, Youth On Water, or YOW, the Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition's flagship programme. Anissa Watson describes the programme to the youth on the first day, and then I couldn't resist captuing leaders Zophia, Kolin and Brian giving safety tips before headng out on the water: with the sounds of a gentle wind and the water splashing around us, it's almost as good as being on the water yourself!
