The community of Lax Kw’alaams, along with Gitxaała, Gitga’at and the Kitasoo/Xai’xais have opposed the treaties that Canada and British Columbia  have initiated with neighboring nations, Kitsumkalum and Kitsalus Rights Chair counselor, Joey, Wesley and others express their disappointment and concern over what they see as failed reconciliation efforts. 

The initial treaties, focusing on land resources and funding have sparked fears that Lax Kw’alaams interest and rights are being ignored. And while the community of Cortez participated in a month long beach cleanup, an entangled three year old male humpback whale named vector was spotted with marine gear tangled on his dorsal fin and body.
